May Gibbs was Australia’s first full-time, professionally trained children’s book illustrator. After studying art in London, she created newspaper illustrations and magazine covers.
Her journey to becoming an author began during World War I when she created a series of postcards for families to send to the soldiers. They featured images of Australian animals with characteristically local sentiments.
